Grades K-3: Pierre the Penguin by Jean Marzollo

“When Pierre, an African penguin living at the California Academy of Sciences, begins to lose his feathers, the zoo staff is at a loss as to what to do. The lack of feathers causes Pierre to lose warmth, making him afraid to swim in the zoo pool. And the other penguins start to shy away, giving Pierre the “cold” shoulder. Unfortunately, heaters and medications fail to correct the situation. But one rainy day, inspiration strikes a biologist named Pam. While walking her dog in the rain, Pam notes that her pet wears a raincoat. Could a “raincoat,” or wet suit, help Pierre? A tiny neoprene wet suit is designed especially for Pierre. But will it work?” (PtP, 2010).

Grades 3-5: Lunch Walks Among Us (Franny K. Stein 1) by Jim Benton

“Franny K. Stein is not your average girl – she’s a mad scientist. She prefers poison ivy to daisies, and when Franny jumps rope, she uses her pet snake. The kids in Franny’s class think she’s weird, wacky, and just plain creepy. Tired of being stared at, Franny decides to attempt her most dangerous experiment yet – she’s going to fit in. But when a giant Monstrous Fiend attacks the class, everyone knows it’s up to a mad scientist to save the day,” (LWAU, 2004).

Grades 5-8: Kristy’s Great Idea (The Baby-sitters Club graphic novel 1) by Raina Telgemeier & Ann M. Martin

“Kristy, Mary Anne, Claudia, and Stacey are best friends and founding members of The Baby-sitters Club. Whatever comes up – cranky toddlers, huge dogs, scary neighbors, prank calls – you can count on them to save the day. Baby-sitting isn’t always easy, and neither is dealing with strict parents, new families, fashion emergencies, and mysterious secrets. But no matter what, the BSC have what they need most: friendship,” (KGI, 2015).

Grades 9-12: If Anything Happens to Me by Luanne Rice

“It’s been eight months since the body of Eloise Parrish was found in the woods. Eloise’s surviving sister, Oli, is numb with grief and shock. But Oli’s also angry. Her sister’s killer was never identified or caught… The case is growing cold, and only Oli seems to care. Until Oli finds another girl left for dead, in the exact spot Eloise’s body was found. Except this girl is alive. She can’t remember how she got there, but Oli knows that she’s the key to solving Eloise’s murder. The two girls join forces to unravel a mystery that is all too real – and all too dangerous. As their search leads them around Oli’s seemingly idyllic hometown, Oli begins to wonder how much she’ll risk to learn the truth,” (IAHtM, 2024).
