YOUTH VIRTUAL BOOK CLUBS

Check out our do-it-at-home book clubs for all ages. All we ask is that you read the book: do as much or as little of the rest of it as you want. No matter how much you do, the book is yours!
There are four age categories: grades K-3, grades 3-5, grades 5-8, and grades 9-12. Every book comes with links to explore, a review form, a few questions, and some activities that tie into the book. We will have posts on www.splyouth.org for anyone who wants to discuss the books or comment on the activities. Supplies are limited, so grab yours today!

Grades K-3: Superbuns! by Diane Kredensor

“Some superheroes can leap tall buildings in a single bound, some can crawl up a wall, some grow wolf-sharp claws, and some have superhuman speed. And Superbuns? Her superpower is being kind. Super kind… Superbuns’s older sister Blossom is a super know-it-all who doesn’t believe kindness is a superpower. Not one bit. And all this kindness is slowing them down on their way to Grammy’s house, where a yummy carrot cobbler awaits. But the sisters are being followed by a little fox...” (S!, 2019).

Grades 3-5: Jake Drake, Know-It-All by Andrew Clements

“Jake Drake is excited about Despres Elementary School’s first science fair. He wants to win the grand prize: a brand-new Hyper-Cross-Functional Bluntium Twelve computer system. And he really wants to beat the third-grade know-it-alls, Marsha McCall and Kevin Young. The trouble is, to beat the know-it-alls, Jake has to become a know-it-all himself. And he may just lose more than he wins,” (JD,K-I-A 2007).

Grades 5-8: The Factory by Catherine Egan

“Asher Doyle is no stranger to misfortune. Bullied at school and struggling with problems at home, he dreams of the day he can leave it all behind him. That’s when he receives an unexpected opportunity: an invitation to join the Factory – a top-secret research facility that’s supposedly developing renewable energy – and Asher will be paid handsomely for his participation. It seems like the answer to all his problems. But not everything is as it seems at the Factory. The other kids in the program are tired and sullen, almost as if they’ve had the life sucked out of them, and the staff members are clearly hiding something… Asher can’t help but feel that whatever the Factory is doing, it’s not what he or any of the other kids signed up for...” (TF, 2025).

Grades 9-12: Stepsister by Jennifer Donnelly

“Isabelle should be blissfully happy – she’s about to win the handsome prince. Except Isabelle isn’t the beautiful girl who lost the glass slipper and captured the prince’s heart. She’s the ugly stepsister who cut off her toes to fit into Cinderella’s shoe – which is now filling with blood… Now she has a chance to alter her destiny and prove what ugly stepsisters have always known: it takes more than heartache to break a girl,” (S, 2020).
