DOWNLOADING EBOOKS TO NOOK (use for adobe EPUB and PDF books)

 Software Installation and Authorization

  1. Before downloading library books, you will need to install Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) on your computer.  Go to www.adobe.com/products/digitaleditions and follow the instructions.

  2. Open Adobe Digital Editions. You will be prompted to create an Adobe account and then to authorize your computer.
    * Unless you have a Nook Color, HD, HD+, or Tablet, you cannot download any digital media directly on your Nook; you must use ADE or Overdrive Media Console (OMC). See the other set of instructions for Nook Color, HD, HD+, or Tablet.

  3. With ADE open, attach the Nook to your computer. You will then be prompted to authorize your Nook. Follow the instructions.

  4. On your computer, the Nook will show up IF ADE is already open, and might NOT show up if you connected the Nook first. On a Mac, the Nook may not show up if ADE is already open when the Nook is attached. Attach the Nook and then open ADE. Your computer may need to restart.

  5. Last, sign into your account on the Ohio Digital Library site, click on ‘Account’ and then ‘Settings’ to set your default lending periods. You can choose up to twenty-one days.

Searching and Downloading eBooks

  1. Minimize ADE and go to the Ohio Digital Library on the library’s website at http://www.swantonpubliclibrary.org/. You can also go directly there by going to this address: http://ohioebooks.com

  2. There you can search for titles in the following ways: Entering title/author/keywords in the search bar next to the magnifying glass, or browsing by genre. The blue bar at the top includes formats and genres (eBook fiction, audiobook nonfiction, etc.).
    * Search results show covers of book titles. In the upper right corner of the cover, you’ll see an icon. An open book means the title is an eBook; a pair of headphones means it’s an audiobook. If the icon is light gray, the title is checked out. If it’s black, then it’s available.

  3. When you have found a title, click on the title under the cover of the book to see which formats are available. You may need to scroll down to see the formats. Once you’re sure you can check out the book, tap on the large blue ‘Borrow’ button under the cover. If you want to bypass this step, hover your mouse over the cover of the book and then click on the ‘Borrow’ button when it appears.
    * You must look for ePUB or PDF versions for the Nook.
    * If the title has no copies available, you may request it by selecting ‘Place a Hold’ and then confirming it on the next screen. When an item on hold is ready to be checked out, sign in and click on ‘Account’ and then ‘Holds’ at the top of the screen.

  4. After you have clicked on ‘Borrow’, click the ‘Download’ button to transfer to your Nook. You may have to select a format. Save the file to your desktop and then double click on it. The title will automatically open in ADE.

Transferring an eBook to Your Nook

  1. ADE should open to your library. If you have a lot of titles, you can click on 'Borrowed items' to narrow it. Drag and drop the title you would like to transfer onto the Nook icon.

  2. The title is now transferred to the device. On your computer, click 'Safely Remove Hardware' icon on the lower right of your monitor screen. When you see 'Safe to Remove Hardware', detach the Nook from your computer. If using a Mac, unmount/eject the Nook using the Finder.

  3. Touch the home button at the bottom of your Nook, and then tap on 'Library' at the bottom of the screen. The book you just downloaded will appear under ‘My stuff’, ‘My documents’, and/or ‘My files’. If there is a folder called 'Digital Editions', touch that to open it. Scroll down to the title. Either touch on the title for the book to open it and start reading, or touch ‘View item details and options’ and then touch ‘Read’.

Returning an eBook Early/Deleting

  1. Books will be automatically returned after the number of days set as default. To return a book early, open ADE on the same computer. Right click on a title’s cover and select ‘Return borrowed item’.

  2. To delete an expired title, open ADE, right click on the cover, and select ‘Delete’ on the list of options.
    * Note: If you returned the book early, the book will not appear and you will not have to do this.

  3. To delete a title from your Nook using ADE, attach the Nook to the computer and click on the Nook icon. Right click on the cover of the title you wish to delete, then select ‘Delete Item’. If using your Nook, touch and hold the cover of the book until a list of options pop up. Select ‘Delete’ and then ‘yes’.

DOWNLOADING AUDIOBOOKS TO NOOK (use for mp3 audiobooks ONLY, for Nooks that cannot install apps)

Initial Setup

  1. You will need to have Overdrive Media Console (OMC) installed on your computer to download audiobooks to a Nook.

  2. On your computer, go to http://omc.overdrive.com/. Select the version you need and then click on ‘Download Now’. Save the file to your desktop (or wherever you prefer). When it’s finished downloading, double-click on the OMC install icon and select ‘Run’. Follow the instructions to install OMC.
    * A shortcut will appear on your desktop when installation is complete. Double-click on this to open OMC.

Finding and Downloading Audiobooks

  1. Go to http://www.swantonpubliclibrary.org/ and click on the Ohio Digital Library link. You can also skip this step by going directly to http://ohioebooks.com

  2. You can search by typing in the box in the search bar near the top, or you can search specifically by audiobook format.
    * Search results show covers of book titles. In the upper right corner of the cover, you’ll see an icon. Look for a pair of headphones. If the icon is light gray, the title is checked out. If it’s black, then it’s available.

  3. When you have found an audiobook, hover your mouse over the cover of the book and then click on ‘Borrow’.

  4. On the next screen, click on ‘Download’. You will be asked where you want to save the file. You can save it to the desktop or allow the computer to create a folder for you. Once you have the file saved, find the file you just downloaded and double-click on it. OMC may also open it for you automatically after the download is finished.
    * You may get a message telling you ‘the specified default download folder for new media does not exist. Do you want to create it?’ Click on 'Yes' to make the folder. If you don’t, click 'No' and select a different folder using ‘browse’.

  5. Once the file is open in OMC, a new window will open with the title selected. Click 'OK'. Another window will open with all parts of the download listed. You can download all of them at once, or just get a few parts at a time.
    * If you decide to get only a few parts at a time, you can always open OMC to download more parts later. Click on the title and then on the ‘Download’ icon at the top of the OMC window. A window will pop up showing which parts have been downloaded, with the parts not downloaded checked for you.

  6. The download will begin. Depending on how many parts there are, it may take a long time. A progress bar for each part will appear at the bottom of the OMC screen. Once the download is finished, you can listen using your computer by selecting the title after opening OMC. You can also transfer it to your Nook.

Transferring Audiobooks to Nook

  1. In OMC, select the title you want to transfer after it’s finished downloading and click on the ‘Transfer’ icon in upper left corner. Connect your Nook to the computer and then click 'Next' on the window that pops up.

  2. You are given a choice on how many parts to transfer. If you want to transfer the whole book, click on ‘Next’.
    * If you want to transfer just a few parts, uncheck the parts you do NOT want transferred. You can transfer them at a later date by opening OMC and selecting the title and ‘Transfer’ again. However, when you click ‘Transfer’ a second time, ALL the parts will be checked, even the ones already transferred. Uncheck all the parts already transferred and then click on ‘Next’.

  3. When it’s done, click on ‘Finish’. You can now disconnect your Nook.

  4. On your Nook, go to ‘Library’ and then on ‘My Stuff’ and/or ‘My Files’. The audiobook may appear as separate files, as Nooks sometimes see audiobooks as music files. If you can’t find it, try folders named either ‘Overdrive’ or ‘ODM’. Tap on the first part to play the audiobook.

Returning/Deleting Items

  1. Audiobooks are automatically returned as well. To return early, open OMC and click on the title you wish to return. In the top row, click on the button marked 'Delete' next to the red X.

  2. To delete off the Nook, tap and hold on each part until ‘Delete’ pops up. Tap on that and then on ‘Delete’ again. You may have to do this for every separate part.

  3. You can also attach your Nook to the computer and open ADE. Click on the Nook icon and find the files. Right click on all parts of the title you wish to delete, then select ‘Delete Item’ on the list of options.
