Summer Reading starts June 2! 

Our theme for SRP 2025 is “Color Our World,”  celebrating art and creativity, as well as the many colors of nature! SPL’s program kicks off Monday, June 2 with the Ice Cream Party; come anytime between noon and 2:00 pm! Preschoolers, kids, and teens are challenged to read for 500 minutes during the summer for fun and prizes – as well as have fun at the library every week. Read with Barli: Therapy Dog

Come read aloud to a certified therapy dog! Friendly giant Barli will be here Saturday, May 17 from 10:00 am to noon! Call, come in, or register online to read to him. Walk-ins welcome!

 

STEAM CLUB EVENTS!

Join us on Fridays at 4:15 pm for fun with science, community partners, and more! Grades K-12.

  • PEEP SCIENCE: May 2. It’s finally happening!  Experiment with leftover marshmallow Peeps! 👀 
  • SEED BOMBS PLUS: May 9. It’s growing season! Make seed bombs to plant outside, along with other hands-on activities with plants and seeds.
  • COSMETIC CHEMISTRY 2: May 16. Experiment with LaJAshley’s Little Science Lab Kit to make Botanical Hair and Body Mist. 
  • CLAY PAINTING: May 23. Combine clay and painting to make works of art.
  • OPEN HOUSE: May 30. See tech demos (and try out some robots and other things for yourself), experiment with art, play with Legos, and more!

 

Interested in joining BOLT (Board of Library Teens)? The next meeting is at 4:30 pm on Wednesday, May 7. Pick up an application at the library. Members help with book selection and event planning. Grades 5-12.

Teen Science Café: Florists & More

Teen Science Café is a free program where teens and STEM experts collaborate on presentations and hands-on activities, led by teens for teens with the help of an adult leader. Join other teens at 3:30 pm on Wednesday, May 7, to hear a professional florist turned hobbyist talk about the ins and outs of flower arranging.

Teen Science Café dates get added throughout the month, so keep on eye on the library’s website, Tumblr, and Facebook to find out who and when the next café will feature!

 

Teen Clubs

  • Club Club Afterschool: Every day after school from 3:30 pm to 4:30 pm. Enjoy snacks and arts and crafts, work on homework, or just hang out together. Teens can request a special activity on Thursdays. No CCA on May 26. Last day for the school year is May 29.
  • Prism pride club: Tuesdays, May 6 and 20 at 4:00 pm. Participants are encouraged to bring an open mind, and be ready to discuss books and play games. 
  • Cosplay Club: Mondays, May 5 and 19 at 3:30 pm. Meet the cosplay club at Sew Beyond Blessed (101 Church Street) to work on your cosplays and learn more about sewing with local cosplayer and seamstress @elysiandawn.cos
  • Anime Club: Join us from 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm on Wednesday, May 14, to watch three episodes of anime nominated for the upcoming Crunchyroll Anime Awards! The audience can choose which show(s) to watch from the nominees. Japanese snacks included! 

 

May Contests for Youth

  • Pet Pursuit Contest for Kids: In honor of National Pet Month, children can look for fifteen pictures of different kinds of pets hidden in the children’s area. Find all fifteen pictures and pick your prize!
  • Which Books Will Be Adapted? Contest for Teens: Pick up an entry form, mark which books will be adapted for screen in 2025, and turn it in for a small prize at the front desk. The teen with the most right answers will win a book that inspired a movie!
