Initial Setup

  1. First, you need to download the Overdrive Media Console app (OMC) to your Nook. NOTE: THIS WILL ONLY WORK IF YOU CAN ACCESS THE GOOGLE PLAY STORE. Nook Apps is no longer able to work. Try following the instructions for a regular Nook if you cannot download the app.

  2. Once in the app store, tap on the box labeled ‘Search Shop’ at the bottom of the screen. Type in ‘overdrive’ and then tap the blue button marked ‘Search’ or 'Done' in the lower right corner.
    * Suggestions for what you might be searching for will pop up above the search box. If you see ‘Overdrive Media Console’ appear, you can also tap on that to complete the search.

  3. Tap on the green box marked ‘Free’ next to Overdrive Media Console. The box will change color and say ‘Confirm’. Tap on it again.
    * If you don’t have a Barnes & Noble account registered with your Nook, a window will pop up saying that the action failed. Tap on ‘add credit card’. This will open a window asking for a name and a credit card number and expiration date. Enter those and then tap ‘Next’. On the next screen, enter your address and then tap ‘Submit’. Once the credit card is added, tap on ‘Free’ and then 'Confirm’ next to OMC again.

  4. The app will then install. Once the box says ‘Purchased’, you can get into the app either from the home screen or by tapping on ‘Apps’ and then on OMC.
    * The first time you open OMC, a screen might come up describing the most recent version. If you don’t want to see this every time, tap on the check mark next to ‘Show at start-up’ to remove it and then tap on ‘Close’.

  5. Next, tap on the navigation icon at the bottom of the screen. The icon is a series of three lines in a circle. Tap ‘Get Books’ and then ‘Add a Library’ at the bottom of the next screen. On the next screen, enter ‘43558’. The first result is Swanton LSD Public Library. Tap on that, and then on the star next to ‘The Ohio Digital Library’. This will set Swanton Library as your default search library in OMC.

  6. If the app doesn't automatically open, return home, go to apps, and open the Overdrive app. Overdrive should then prompt you to create an Overdrive account. If you have one, sign in. If not, sign up with your email as the username, and create a password.
    * You should only have to do this once, but make sure you remember the password in case you need to enter it again in the future.

  7. Last, sign into your account on the Ohio Digital Library site (this is different from your Overdrive account). Click on 'sign in' and then select 'Swanton LSD Public Library' from the dropdown and enter your library card number. Click on ‘Account’ and then ‘Settings’ to set your default lending periods. You can choose up to twenty-one days.

Finding and Downloading Titles

  1. To find a title you wish to download, go to Apps and tap the Overdrive app, and then tap the navigation icon (three horizontal lines) at the bottom of the screen. Tap ‘Get Books’, then tap on ‘The Ohio Digital Library.’

  2. There are two main ways to look for titles. Either tap on the menu icon (three horizontal lines) at the top of the screen to pull up format genres to search in (eBook fiction and nonfiction, audiobook fiction or nonfiction, etc.), or tap on the magnifying glass icon to bring up a search box to look for specific titles. You will need your library card number to check out.
    * Search results show covers of book titles. In the upper right corner of the cover, you’ll see an icon. An open book means the title is an eBook; a pair of headphones means it’s an audiobook. If the icon is light gray, the title is checked out. If it’s black, then it’s available.

  3. When you have found a title, tap on the cover of the book. A blue 'Borrow' button will appear. Tap on that to check it out.
    * Do NOT check out anything with Kindle format for this app. Use only for mp3 audiobooks or EPUB or PDF formats. To check formats for a certain title, click on 'more' after tapping the cover and then scroll down.

  4. Tap either ‘Download’ or, if it’s an eBook, ‘Read (in your browser)’.
    * While you can read in the browser, it won’t be downloaded to the actual Nook, so you would have to return to the Ohio Digital Library every time you want to read, and may lose your place. Downloading is fast and easier to access.

  5. If you chose ‘Download’, you may need to choose a format and click on ‘Confirm & Download’. Remember to only choose mp3 audiobooks or EPUB or PDF formats. The title is now on your Overdrive Bookshelf. Tap on the navigation icon at the bottom and then on Bookshelf. Tap the title to begin reading or listening.

  6. To access any of your titles in the browser, tap on the little person icon at the top of the screen on the Ohio Digital Library website to open your account.

Returning Items Early/Deleting

  1. Books will automatically be returned. However, there are two ways to return the book early.

  2. First, go to the Overdrive app. If you don’t see your title, tap on the navigation icon and then on ‘Bookshelf’.

  3. Touch and hold the ‘+’ in the circle to the right of the title you wish to return or delete.

  4. The option ‘Return/delete’ should pop up. Touch ‘return/delete’. Another window will open with the options ‘Return then Delete’ or ‘Delete Only’. Touch ‘Return then Delete’. This will both return your book on Overdrive and delete it from your device.

  5. If you are just deleting an expired title, touch and hold the ‘+’ in the circle to the right of the title, then tap on ‘Delete’.

  6. You can also tap on the navigation icon while reading the book and select ‘Return/Delete’ from the menu that pops up at the bottom of the screen.

  7. If none of these options works, try touching and holding on the cover of the book until ‘Return/Delete’ appears.
