INITIAL SETUP

OverDrive Media Console (OMC)

  1. Go to the App Store and search for OverDrive Media Console (OMC). When it comes up, touch the app to begin installation. Touch the ‘Get’ button by the app name. It will change to ‘Install app’. Touch ‘Install app’ and follow the directions.-

  2. You will be asked for your Apple ID password. If you don’t have an Apple ID, you can create one here: http://appleid.apple.com/ After the ID is entered, the app will install. When it’s finished, if it doesn't open automatically, tap on ‘Open’, or go home and tap on the OverDrive icon to open it.

  3. If this is the first time using OMC, Overdrive should then prompt you to create an Overdrive account. If you have one, sign in. If not, sign up with your email as the username, and create a password.
    * You should only have to do this once, but make sure you remember the password in case you need to enter it again.

  4. In OMC, either swipe on the screen to the right to open a menu on the left, or touch the three lines (navigation icon) in the upper left corner. Touch ‘Add a Library’ in the left menu. Enter “43558” in the search field and tap ‘search.’ Select ‘Swanton LSD Public Library’ from the top of the list. On the next screen, touch the star next to ‘The Ohio Digital Library’ to select it.

  5. On the Ohio Digital Library's page, touch ‘Sign In’ at the top right. At the login screen, select 'Swanton LSD Public Library' from the dropdown menu. At the next screen, enter your library card number. You can check the box to remember the card number if you want, so you won’t have to enter it again.

  6. Last, tap on 'Account' and then 'Settings' on the Ohio Digital Library page to set your default loan periods. You can choose up to twenty-one days.

Kindle App

  1. Go to the App Store and search for ‘kindle’. The first result should be ‘Kindle – read books, magazines, & more’. When it comes up, touch the app to begin installation.

  2. You will be asked for your Apple ID password. If you don’t have an Apple ID, you can create one here: http://appleid.apple.com/ After the ID is entered, the app will install.

FINDING AND DOWNLOADING MEDIA

  1. In the Overdrive app, tap on the navigation icon (three lines)/swipe to the right of the screen to open the menu and then on ‘Ohio Digital Library’ to search. From here, you can log in to your account if needed. The screen may open onto the Digital Library already, depending on where it was left last time OMC was opened.
    * You will use OMC to search for all compatible formats (EPUB, PDF, mp3 audiobook, Kindle).
    * You may need to enter your Apple ID again before searching.

  2. To search for a specific title, tap the box marked 'Search' in the bar at the top, next to the magnifying glass. It will expand so you can type in the title. Then tap 'Go' or 'Search'.
    * Search results show covers of book titles. In the upper right corner of the cover, you’ll see an icon. An open book means the title is an eBook; a pair of headphones means it’s an audiobook. If the icon is light gray, the title is checked out. If it’s black, then it’s available.
    * If you only want to search for books you can check out right now, tap on 'Available Now’ after running the search to narrow your results.

  3. To browse, you can select genres within types of formats (eBooks or audiobooks). Then you can either scroll through the results, or look for specifics by typing in the ‘Search within results’ box that comes up.

  4. To check out a title, tap on the cover and select 'Borrow'. If you want to see more about the title, including what formats it's available in, select 'more'.
    * EPUB and PDF formats for eBooks will be read in OMC, as well as mp3 audiobooks. Kindle books will be checked out through OMC but will appear in the Kindle app. See number 7 for borrowing Kindle books.
    * If a title is unavailable, the button will say ‘Place a hold’. Tap on that and confirm your email address on the next page to be alerted when the item is available. If you are picking up a hold, tap on ‘Account’ at the top of the screen and then ‘Holds’

  5. Touch ‘Download.’ You may need to select a format and ‘Confirm & Download’. Make note of which format you choose so you know whether to go to the OMC app or the Kindle app to read/listen.

  6. If you selected EPUB, PDF, or mp3 audiobooks, the title will now download to OMC. If the book doesn't automatically open, touch the navigation icon and then Bookshelf. Then tap on the title to begin reading/listening. You may need to tap on 'Download all files' if a warning comes up saying it has not been downloaded yet.
    * Note: Once a book is open in OMC, tap on the middle of screen to get back to the menu.

  7. For Kindle, after confirming your download you will be taken to Amazon’s site. (Tap on 'Download Kindle Book' next to the title if you are not taken there automatically.) Select the device to deliver the book to using the dropdown menu under the 'Get Library book' button (your device should already be there, but if not, tap on it and select your device from the dropdown), and then tap the yellow box marked ‘Continue’. This screen may also be bypassed entirely, depending on your settings.

Tap ‘Get library book’ in the yellow box. If you are not logged into Amazon, you will prompted to log in. Enter your Amazon account information.

Next, you should get a thank you screen. Go back to the home screen and touch the Kindle app. When it opens, your book should appear there after a moment. When it has finished downloading, touch it to start reading.

RETURNING ITEMS EARLY/DELETING

OverDrive Media Condole

  1. Books are automatically returned. To return the book early in OMC, go to the Overdrive app, touch the navigation icon and then 'Bookshelf', and touch and hold the cover of the title.

  2. The options ‘Delete’, ‘Return’, and ‘Share’ should pop up at the bottom of the cover. Touch ‘Return’. This will both return and delete the title. ‘Delete’ is used for expired titles you wish to remove from OMC.

Kindle App

  1. To return Kindle books early, you must open the web browser/Safari and go to http://www.amazon.com and sign in. Tap on ‘Your Account’ near the top right and then select ‘Manage Your Content and Devices’. This will open a list of all the items you have. (You may have to enter your Amazon password again.)

  2. In the 'Actions' column, click on the box (with three dots in it) next to the name of the library eBook you would like to return. A menu will pop up. Select 'Return this book'.

  3. The book will still appear in your Kindle app, however, unless you delete it. Go back to the Kindle app and touch and hold the cover of the book. ‘Delete Permanently’ should appear. Tap on that to remove the book.
    * If you instead get a screen or note telling you the book has been returned, tap the navigation icon in the upper left corner and select 'Library'. Then touch and hold the cover again to delete.
