DOWNLOADING KINDLE BOOKS TO KINDLE FIRE/TOUCH

Finding Kindle Books

  1. From your Kindle’s web browser, go to Swanton Library’s website: http://www.swantonpubliclibrary.org/
  2. Tap on the Ohio Digital Library link. You can also skip the first step and go there directly: http://ohioebooks.com

  3. In the upper right corner of the screen, tap ‘Sign in’, and tap on the box and find Swanton LSD Public Library’. Tap on it, then enter your library barcode in the box below and tap ‘Sign in’.

  4. Once you've signed in, tap on 'Account' and then 'Settings' and choose your default loan periods. You can select up to twenty-one days. You will only have to do this once.

  5. To find books, type in the search box on the right, or tap on subjects you’re interested in on the blue menu bar under either eBook fiction or eBook nonfiction to browse. Depending on the display, you may need to tap on the menu icon (three horizontal lines) or tap on the magnifying glass icon to bring up a search box to look for specific titles.
    * Search results show covers of book titles. In the upper right corner of the cover, you’ll see an icon. An open book means the title is an eBook; a pair of headphones means it’s an audiobook. If the icon is light gray, the title is checked out. If it’s black, then it’s available.

  6. When you have found a title, tap on the cover of the book to see which formats are available and check for Kindle in the box either to the right or below the title information.  Once you’re sure you can check out the book, tap on the large blue ‘Borrow’ button.
    * If the title has no copies available, you may request it by selecting ‘Place a Hold’ and then confirming it on the next screen. When an item on hold is ready to be checked out, sign in and tap on ‘Account’ and then ‘Holds’.
    * After you have tapped on ‘Borrow’, you can either select ‘Read (in your browser)’ or ‘Download’ to transfer to your Kindle. Downloading is recommended. You may have to select the Kindle format and then ‘Confirm and Download’.

Checking out and Downloading Kindle Books

  1. After you tap on ‘Borrow’ and confirm the download, a new browser window will open, showing you your title within the Amazon Kindle page. If you are not already logged into your Amazon.com account, log in with your email address and Amazon password. Make sure that you log into the same account that you registered with your Kindle. You can then download the book in one of two ways.

  2. WiFi: This is the recommended method. Tap on ‘Get library book’ on the Amazon page for the book. Make sure the ‘deliver to’ field is set to your Kindle, and then tap ‘Continue’. The site may skip this step if a default is already set. If needed, tap on ‘Download now’. On the Kindle Fire, the download tab at the top left, next to your Kindle’s name, might show a ‘1’ to indicate a new download. Tap on this and then on the book title.
    * Note: You might also get a misleading message that says ‘Your Kindle will download [title] next time it connects to Wi-Fi’, or a screenshot saying you will need to open or save a file. If either shows up, ignore them and instead tap the ‘Settings’ icon at the top of your screen and then tap ‘Sync’.
    * You can also tap on ‘Sync’ if Amazon does not give an option to select your Kindle and the book doesn’t appear. After tapping ‘Sync’, go to Home or to ‘Books’ and tap the cover of the book. The book should then download.

  3. USB: If you choose to use a USB cable, get on a computer and go to the Ohio Digital Library, then log in and click on ‘Account’. Your book, and the ‘Download’ option, will appear. Attach your Kindle to your computer using the USB cable and then tap on ‘Download’. This will take you to the Amazon page, where you can click on ‘Get library book’. You may be prompted to log in to Amazon here. If you are asked to choose a device for delivery, select ‘Transfer via Computer’ and then select your Kindle. When it asks you where to save the file, choose your Kindle from the dropdown and then save the .AZW file in the folder named ‘Documents’. Then detach the Kindle from the computer. The book should be under the ‘Books’ tab.

Returning/Deleting Kindle Books

  1. Books are automatically returned. To return a title early, log into Amazon. Tap on ‘Account’ on the top right side. Select ‘Manage Your Content and Devices’ from the dropdown. A list of the titles on the Kindle will come up.

  2. In the 'Actions' column, click on the box (with three dots in it) next to the name of the library eBook you would like to return. A menu will pop up. Select 'Return this book'.

  3. You will also use this method to delete a title whose loan period has expired. Select the 'actions' box again and choose the option to delete. The screen will pause for a moment before reloading. The book will then be deleted from your Amazon account. The title will not be deleted from the Kindle itself, however.

  4. To delete an expired title from the Kindle, go to the home page and then the ‘Books’ tab. Touch and hold the title of the book until the option ‘Remove from device’ appears. Tap on that to remove it.
    * If the book still appears in the carousel on the home page, touch and hold the title until ‘Remove from carousel’ appears. Tap that to remove it.

DOWNLOADING EPUB BOOKS OR MP3 AUDIOBOOKS (KINDLE FIRE ONLY)

Initial Setup

  1. Download the Overdrive Media Console app to your Fire. (You cannot do this on Kindle Touch.)

  2. Go to Apps and then tap on ‘Store’. Type in ‘Overdrive’ and then select ‘Overdrive Media Console’ from the list. Tap on ‘Free’ next to it and then on ‘Get App’.
    * You may get an error message about needing to add an address. Tap on ‘click here’ and then sign into your Amazon account. You will need to have a default payment selected, even though the app is free. Add this information, then go back to apps and try again.
    * Note: When attempting to download or install software, you may get a message: ‘For security, your device is set to block installation of applications not sourced in Android Market’. To allow installation, tap on the settings icon, then tap ‘Device’. The setting ‘Allow installation of applications’ should be ON.

  3. A download tab (‘1’) should appear in the upper left corner. Tap on this and when the download window opens, tap on the app’s name and then tap ‘Install’. If it doesn't appear, go to apps and select the app to install. Once it’s installed, tap ‘Open’ if needed.

  4. If the app doesn't automatically open, return home, go to apps, and open the Overdrive app. Overdrive should then prompt you to create an Overdrive account. If you have one, sign in. If not, sign up with your email as the username, and create a password.
    * You should only have to do this once, but make sure you remember the password in case you need to enter it again in the future.

  5. Tap the navigation icon at the bottom middle of the page, which is a series of lines inside a three-sided box. Use this icon to navigate while in the Overdrive app. Tap ‘Get Books’. Tap ‘Add a Library’ and enter 43558. Select your library and tap the star next to Ohio Digital Library to add the Swanton LSD Public Library Overdrive website.

Finding and Downloading Titles

  1. To search for a title you wish to download, go to Apps and tap the Overdrive app, and then tap the navigation icon at the middle bottom of the screen. Tap ‘Get Books’ and then ‘The Ohio Digital Library’.

  2. Either tap on the menu icon (three horizontal lines) at the top of the screen to pull up format genres to search in (eBook fiction and nonfiction, audiobook fiction or nonfiction, etc.), or tap on the magnifying glass icon to bring up a search box to look for specific titles.

  3. When you have found a title, tap on the cover of the book and then on the large blue ‘Borrow’ button.
    * Do NOT check out anything with Kindle format for this app. Use only for mp3 audiobooks or EPUB/PDF formats.

  4. Tap ‘Download’ and then, if needed, select the right format and tap ‘Confirm & Download’ again.

  5. The title is downloaded to your Overdrive Bookshelf. Tap the navigation icon to return to the Bookshelf, and tap the title to begin reading or listening.

Returning Items Early/Deleting

  1. Books are automatically returned. To return titles early, go to the Overdrive app. If you don’t see the book, touch the middle icon on the bottom and then touch ‘Bookshelf’. Touch and hold the ‘+’ in the circle to the right of the title. The option ‘Return/delete’ should pop up. Touch ‘return/delete’. Another window will open with the options ‘Return then delete’ or ‘delete only’. Touch ‘Return then delete’.

  2. You can also tap on the navigation icon while reading or listening to the book and select ‘Return/Delete’ from the menu that pops up at the bottom of the screen.

  3. If neither of these options are showing, try touching and holding the cover of the book until the options pop up, then select ‘Return/delete.’
